Gourmet flavored coffee dates back to ancient Middle Easterners, who often added spices such as cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg to freshly roasted coffee. Today many roasters produce flavored coffee to appeal to people who aren’t frequent coffee drinkers or who are looking for a special occasion beverage or a low-calorie dessert substitute.

Surveys commissioned by the Coffee Development Group revealed that 52 percent of all whole bean flavored coffee drinkers have tried flavored coffees. Gourmet flavored coffee is produced by adding flavorings like amaretto, cinnamon, hazelnut and others. The coffee could include blended, light, medium, or dark roasted coffee beans and can even be decaffeinated. Generally, roasters apply flavoring oils or powders directly onto the freshly roasted beans, when the beans are still warm and absorbent. The gourmet coffee beans are mixed, either in the roasting equipment’s cooling tray or in a special blender, and allowed to sit so the flavoring is absorbed completely. Gourmet flavored coffee offers an excellent alternative to regular coffee.
