Organic Coffee

Organic coffee is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the natural environment. Organic growing replenishes and maintains soil fertility, reduces the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and builds biologically diverse agriculture. Organic farmers are evaluated and certified for using only methods and materials allowed in organic growing.

Organic coffee is grown across many continents from North and South America to Africa to Asia and specifically in countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico and many others. The United States grows organic coffee in Hawaii. The leading producers of organic coffee include Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Peru.

The USDA Organic seal can appear on any coffee product that contains at least 95 percent organic ingredients and that has been certified as organic by a certification agency accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The coffee may also carry a label saying “100 percent organic” or “Organic.”

Globally, organic coffee represents about 6% of the coffee sold in the major consuming countries. Buying organic has reached the mainstream with many major grocery stores offering an array of organic products. As a conscientious coffee drinker, you want to make sure that the coffee you are purchasing is certified organic.
